Potential Drug Interactions in Patients with Type II Diabetes and Concomitant Hypertension in Mangusada Hospital Badung

Abstract

Patients with type II diabetes may experience complications such as hypertension of which the incidence is quite high in Indonesia, including Bali. Management of both conditions usually involves antidiabetic and antihypertensive agents simultaneously. This study aimed to calculate the incidence of potential drug interactions in patients with type II diabetes and concomitant hypertension at the Mangusada Hospital Badung. This study was conducted under observational cross-sectional design during September 2022-August 2023. Inclusion criteria were type II diabetes outpatients with hypertension aged ?18 years receiving not less than two types of medication and had medical record data available during the period of year 2022. The results showed that of the 68 patient’s medical records, female patients were dominating (52.94%). Meanwhile, the largest age group was >65 years (55.88%). The most frequent number of potential drug interactions were metformin and amlodipine with 43 cases (63.23%) among the total incidence in all patients being 66.17%. The most common interaction mechanisms were pharmacodynamics (63.23%) and moderate severity level (66.17%). These findings may contribute for improving patient care through the collaborative role of health practicioners, as well as developing prospective research on the aspect of actual drug interactions and relevant treatments in the future.
