Abstract

Indonesia's tropical climate contributes to a high incidence of bacterial infections, including those caused by Staphylococcus aureus. This Gram-positive bacterium forms irregular clusters, does not produce spores, is facultatively anaerobic, and is immobile. It is responsible for various infections, including skin infections, endocarditis, bacteremia, and pneumonia. Vesicularia ferriei, an aquarium moss commonly used in aquascaping, belongs to the Hypnaceae family and contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, flavonols, and triterpenoids. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Vesicularia ferriei ethanol extract against Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activity was tested using the disc diffusion method with the pour plate technique at concentrations of 100 ppm, 500 ppm, 1,000 ppm, 5,000 ppm, and 10,000 ppm, with three replications. The results showed weak inhibition zones around the paper discs at 5,000 ppm (3.76 mm) and 10,000 ppm (4.76 mm). The negative control (10% DMSO) produced no inhibition zone, while the positive control (Cefadroxil antibiotic) exhibited a strong inhibition zone averaging (15.07 mm). These findings indicate that the ethanol extract of Vesicularia ferriei has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, albeit in the weak category. This study serves as a reference for further research exploring different extraction methods, antibacterial testing techniques, solvents, and extract concentrations. Additional studies are needed to investigate the broader benefits of Vesicularia ferriei extract and its potential as an antibacterial agent.
