Abstract

Increased use of skincare products among university students has raised the risk of adverse effects due to inadequate understanding of cosmetic safety. Low cosmetic literacy may affect individuals’ ability to select and use skincare products safely. This study aimed to analyze the role of cosmetic literacy in preventing the risk of skincare side effects among pharmacy students. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a cross-sectional and descriptive phenomenological design. A total of 141 undergraduate pharmacy students who used skincare products were selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed descriptively and through intervariable relationship analysis. The results showed that the majority of respondents had moderate levels of knowledge (56.74%), perception (49.65%), and behavior (66.68%). Almost all respondents (99.3%) used skincare products, and 79.4% used them daily. Social media was the primary source of skincare information (45%). The most commonly reported side effects included acne or skin bumps (30.2%), redness (19.4%), itching (14.9%), and burning or stinging sensations (14.9%). This study indicates that cosmetic literacy plays an important role in shaping safe skincare use behavior and may help prevent the risk of side effects among pharmacy students.
